Introduction to Q Methodology (Part 2)

Abstract

The Q methodology workshops are led by two experts, Dr Xinran Wu and Dr Nicola Morea. The two workshops will explore the principles and applications Q methodology (Q), providing participants with an understanding of Q, as well as with hands-on experience on analysing and interpreting Q data.

The second workshop, led by Dr Nicola Morea, will provide participants with practical experience of analysing and interpreting Q data, and namely setting up a Q-sort file, calculating a Q-sort correlation matrix, deciding the factor extraction, rotation and retention methods, Q-sort flagging, and factor visualisation and interpretation. This will lead to a discussion around the qualitative nature of factor analysis and the importance of selecting, following and reporting criteria to justify the chosen factor solution.

After the workshop, participants will be able to make a more informed decision on the suitability of Q for their research. The workshop will also provide participants with a solid foundation to understand and critically evaluate Q research, as well as to apply Q methodology in real-world research.

Date & Time 23 October 2024 (Wednesday) 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm (HKT)

Format Online via Zoom

Target audience CUHK Academic staff

Pre-workshop reading group

The pre-workshop reading group will provide opportunities for participants to review and read related literatures with guidance from experts. This reading group intends to develop participants’ understanding on data analysis and interpretation methos of Q data to prepare for the workshop and the consultation session.

Date & Time 22 October 2024 (Tuesday) 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm (HKT)

Format Online via Zoom

Target audience CUHK Academic staff

Post-workshop group consultation

The group consultation will provide guided questions for participants to discuss and reflect on, following some thinking exercises. This consultation intends to provide the space essential for participants to ask questions. This discussion will be around the qualitative nature of factor analysis and how to select an appropriate factor solution method.
