Part 1: Theoretical Workshop

Speaker: Mr. Leon Furze, Consultant, Author and PHD Candidate, Furze Smith Consulting


Mr. Leon Furze is a consultant, best selling author, and PhD candidate with over fifteen years' experience in secondary and tertiary education. His PhD is focused on the implications of Generative Artificial Intelligence for teachers of writing.


Abstract: Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) has continued to disrupt many industries, including education. Since the release of ChatGPT in 2022, education providers have been coming to terms with increasingly capable, multimodal GenAI like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, and DeepSeek. This session explores the practical and ethical implications of GenAI in education, and how we might adjust our assessments to remain valid in the face of the technology.

Part 2: Practical Sharing Sessions

Speakers: Dr. LAI Pit Shun, Senior Lecturer, Department of Chinese Language and Literature, The Chinese University of Hong Kong; Dr. Steven YEUNG, Senior Lecturer, English Language Teaching Unit, The Chinese University of Hong Kong


Abstract: Following the introduction of the practical and ethical implications of GenAI in education, two CUHK colleagues will share their experiences in teaching English and Chinese language courses in the age of AI. Specifically, Dr. Steven Yeung will present a project that examines the performance of AI in identifying and annotating rhetorical components of research writing. Dr. Ronald Lai will discuss the operation of university-level Chinese language courses in the context of the AI era. The presentations will explore how and to what extent students can utilise AI in the writing process, while also outlining various foreseeable challenges and strategies for addressing them.


Note: Dr. Ronald Lai's sharing will be conducted in Cantonese.
