Topics & Speakers
Dr. Liz Bradbury, Senior Lecturer Sociology, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty of Arts, Humanities, Education and Social Sciences, Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, United Kingdom
Dr. Liz Bradbury is a sociology lecturer with a senior fellowship of the HEA. She is interested in identifying policy and strategic actions universities can take towards fully inclusive access and participation for all students. Her current research aims to open new perspectives on belonging and situated learning for students from first generation/ low-income backgrounds.
Topic: What does 'belonging to university' mean?
Abstract: This presentation will discuss key findings of my EDI-related research projects with ARU students which explored their experiences of ‘belonging’ to university. The findings of these projects are consistent with wider research in pointing to the vital importance for all students’ social and psychological wellbeing, and good educational outcomes of universities creating more inclusive and better pathways to belonging. I will conclude on a more speculative note by pointing to some wider implications for the future sustainability of the UK HEI sector of work to build belonging, by contrasting current university cultures of scarcity to emergent ‘cultures of abundance’.
Dr. Jasmine Yang, Lecturer, Office of University General Education, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong
Dr. Jasmine Jie Yang serves as a Lecturer in the Office of University General Education at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). Dr. Yang obtained her Ph.D. in Science Education from the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, the Faculty of Education, CUHK. Her research interests currently lie in teaching strategies, curriculum design and peer assisted study. She has taught the university compulsory General Education course in Dialogue with Nature for 12 years.
Mr. Fung Tin Yau Philip, PASS Leader, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong
Mr. So Ching Elvin, PASS Leader, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong
Topic: Peer Assisted Study Session (PASS) in University General Education Course
Abstract: PASS has been integrated into CUHK General Education Foundation Programme courses for more than a decade and is an important supplement to teacher’s regular tutorials and lectures. Students feel more included and valued in PASS, which leads to more active learning and better academic performance.
In this presentation, two medical students who have served as PASS leaders for the University General Education course in Dialogue with Nature will be invited to share their peer-assisted learning experiences and reflections. We will explore how PASS takes into account students' individual differences and meets their diverse learning needs. What are the main challenges faced by PASS leaders? What support should teachers provide for them?
