Topic: AI-supported formative assessment in higher education: A review of current practices and directions for pedagogic research

Abstract: While artificial intelligence is increasingly used to support formative assessment in higher education, our understanding of its effectiveness and impact on student learning remains limited. This highlights the importance of pedagogic research that can inform decisions on how to integrate AI into assessment. This talk will first review recent literature to explore how AI supports formative assessment across disciplinary and pedagogical contexts and examine what available evidence reveals about its effects. It will then focus on the experience in implementing AI-supported writing assessment in a language education setting to reflect on how relevant studies can be designed to understand student engagement and experience. Based on both the review and the work undertaken, the talk will discuss how educators in higher education may approach pedagogic research in this area. The talk concludes with suggestions for research directions and relevant considerations for colleagues interested in researching AI-supported formative assessment in their own contexts.

Dr. James TRUEMAN, Associate Professor, Academic Lead in Academic Systems and Assessment, Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, United Kingdom
